Description

Provides semi-skilled labor to repair and maintain gasoline, compressed natural gas, hydrogen fuel cell, battery electric buses, paratransit vehicles and other motorized equipment in compliance with established procedures and maintenance standards to ensure the safety and reliability of the District's fleet vehicles. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: This is a journey-level classification requiring the successful performance of the majority of assigned job tasks independently and consistent with established work standards and District protocols. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: This classification reports to the Director of Maintenance, Maintenance Manager and Maintenance Supervisors. This classification does not supervise. CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Principles of internal combustion engines
  • Methods, tools, equipment, and materials used in the repair and maintenance of motorized equipment
  • Safe driving practices
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical troubles and determine appropriate maintenance work
  • The use of shop equipment and tools to make necessary repairs

Examples of Duties

The functions and duties listed below represent the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if the work is related. Management reserves the right to add, modify, change or rescind work assignments as needed.

  • Repair and maintain CNG, H2 FC, and gasoline powered buses and other transportation equipment
  • Steam clean equipment
  • Perform preventative maintenance
  • Assist in the repair of equipment
  • Mount and dismount tires
  • Adjust brakes
  • Install batteries, tires, and wiring
  • Grease and service equipment
  • Change oil and oil filters
  • Service and perform simple heavy duty work

Typical Qualifications

Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties and responsibilities of the classification is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills and abilities is as follows:

EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or equivalent to graduation from high school (GED). LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATES: Possess a valid California Driver's License with driving record acceptable to the District, along with three (3) years of driving experience.

REQUISITE KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL LEVELS:

  • TIA Tire Certification
  • CNG Tank Certification
  • ASE H-4 Transit Bus Air Brake Certification
  • ASE H-8 Preventative Maintenance and Inspection Certification
  • Type II Refrigeration License
  • Forklift Operators Permit

REQUISITE ABILITIES:

  • Ability to obtain California Commercial Class "B" Driver's license with air brake and passenger endorsements within 6 months of position appointment.
  • Ability to provide own hand tools and storage cabinet.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a certificate to operate a forklift.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a CNG / Hydrogen Tank Inspection Certification.
  • Ability obtain and maintain a T.I.A Commercial Tire Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain an ASE Transit Bus Air Brake, Preventative Maintenance and two other ASE Transit Bus certifications.
  • Requisite reading, mathematical, comprehension and written language skills in order to perform the essential requirements of the job.
  • Adequate computer skills and ability to accurately record vehicle maintenance records electronically.
  • Ability to follow instructions from Supervision and comprehend written procedures to complete work tasks.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of determination and commitment to personal and professional development and learning.
  • Ability to learn effective use of vehicle diagnostic software applications. Ability to demonstrate a high degree of determination and commitment to personal and professional development and learning.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL TASKS & ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: The physical and mental demands described here are representative of those that must be met by employees to successfully perform the essential functions of this class. Exposure to extreme heat, 100+, for up to 10 hours duration when performing repair work in summer weather. (District requires that employees wear appropriate light clothing and drink liquids to prevent dehydration). Exposure to extreme temperature swings, 70-110, for up to 4 hours duration, when leaving air-conditioned office to work outside in summer heat. (District advises that employees drink liquids to prevent dehydration). Exposure to extreme noise, up to 90 decibels, when using steam cleaning equipment, blowers and etc. (District requires that employees wear protective ear devices and obey all safety rules). Work outdoors to perform cleaning duties on shelters, benches, bus terminals and etc. Work indoors to clean offices. Exposure to health hazards when cleaning public facilities and street furniture. (District requires that employees use all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while performing job duties.) Exposure to explosions when fueling equipment. Risk involves the possibility of being burned. (District requires proper ventilation to dispenser fumes and strict adherence to all safety rules). Exposure to fumes, unpleasant odors, and potentially health hazards when using cleaning chemicals. Risk of throat or lung irritation and/or loss of consciousness. (District requires proper ventilation, the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and adherence to all required and recommended safety rules). Exposure to dust when performing grounds maintenance. Risk of respiratory discomfort. (District requires the use of a facemask). Exposure to chemical hazards when working with cleaning products. Risk of eye or skin irritation. (District requires use of rubber gloves, safety glasses and conformance to hazardous waste/MSDS requirements). Exposure to extreme cold, 30, for up to 4 hours duration, to clean shelters and benches, empty trash cans, etc. (District advises employees to wear clothing suitable for weather conditions). Sit to perform record keeping and drive vehicles, Climb hand-over-hand to climb ladder to clean the tops of shelters. Climb a ladder hand over hand grasp and climb Sit to complete work orders sit and twist.

Supplemental Information

A background check will be conducted for this classification. All Golden Empire Transit District employees are designated "Disaster Service Workers" through state and local laws (CA Government Code Sec. 3100-3109). In the event of a declared emergency or any undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, GET employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers. Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees' normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency. As Disaster Service Workers, all Golden Empire Transit District employees are expected to remain at work, or to report for work as soon as practicable following a significant emergency or disaster.
