MAINTENANCE WORKER
BASIC FUNCTION:
Under the direction of the Director-MOT, perform a variety of general duties involved in the maintenance and repair of District buildings, facilities and equipment.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Perform a variety of general duties involved in the maintenance and repair of District buildings, facilities and equipment including tasks in areas such as plumbing, carpentry, electrical work, HVAC, glazing, welding and painting; assist with maintaining facilities in safe operating condition.
Receive and respond to work orders; inspect facilities and equipment to determine maintenance and repair needs; replace defective parts and components as needed; perform preventive maintenance activities; assist in arranging for major maintenance and repairs as needed.
Perform a variety of general carpentry work; install, alter, repair or construct articles and structures of wood such as cabinets, furniture, partitions, shelving and doors; install classroom equipment and fixtures; repair and install locks; move, arrange and assemble furniture.
Maintain electrical systems and fixtures; replace ballasts, light bulbs, fuses, circuits, lighting fixtures, switches and other electrical components and equipment; trace out and install wiring and cabling as assigned.
Perform general plumbing duties; inspect and repair leaks, obstructions and general system failures; maintain and repair urinals, toilets, sinks, water lines and facets; replace pipes as needed; remove drain and line obstructions.
Maintain and repair heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and equipment; diagnose malfunctions and determine repair needs; inspect and perform tests on systems and equipment to identify defective parts and assure proper functioning; repair freezers and ice machines.
Patch and paint walls and other surfaces; prepare surfaces for painting; remove paint and graffiti as needed; repair, replace and fit windows and tiles; clean and repair gutters and drains; pour, finish, remove and patch concrete as required; install, maintain and repair fencing.
Perform routine welding in the fabrication, repair and installation of metal parts and components as directed; utilize appropriate welding equipment.
Operate and maintain a variety of equipment such as drills, saws, welders, pipe cutters, grinders, forklifts, trucks and various hand and power tools; drive a vehicle to conduct work
Plan, organize and lay out assigned tasks; interpret diagrams, sketches, schematics, technical manuals and specifications; work from verbal and written instructions and work orders; respond to emergency situations as needed.
Estimate labor, material and equipment needed for assigned projects; monitor inventory levels of materials and equipment; order, receive and maintain inventory of materials and equipment; confer with vendors and contractors concerning pricing, bids, maintenance and repairs.
Communicate with District personnel and various outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.
Maintain work areas, equipment and tools in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Identify and report safety, sanitary, security and fire incidents and hazards to appropriate personnel.
Maintain routine records related to work orders and assigned activities.

KNOWLEDGE OF:
Standard tools, equipment, materials, methods and techniques used in general construction, maintenance and repair.
Operation and proper maintenance of equipment and machinery used in the building trades.
Requirements of maintaining buildings and equipment in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Preventive maintenance principles and practices.
Use of hand and power tools used in maintenance and repair.
Appropriate health and safety precautions and procedures.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by completion of an approved apprenticeship program and two years general maintenance experience.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Valid California driver's license.
